The next generation of Heavy Equipment Technicians are being trained daily at the Operating Engineers 324 Construction Career Center in Howell, Michigan. Heavy Equipment Technicians are the mechanics that keep the excavators, dozers, cranes, and other equipment running - eliminating downtime and making sure our work building Michigan continues with as little interruption as possible. Apprentices gain skills like engine diagnosis and repair, tool identification, hydraulics, electrical and fuel systems repair, and welding, among other skills. Last week, #OE324 hosted a press conference to announce that the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has been awarded a $10 million federal grant to support the state's registered apprenticeship expansion efforts and increase employment opportunities for Michiganders. OE324 Apprentice Alicia Harrell spoke, as did OE324 LMEC Director Lee Graham, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Ajax Paving Industries, Inc.'s Christina O'Brien, Cheryl Sanford from the Workforce Development Institute (WDI) , and representatives from Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The event was hosted at the OE324 facility in Grand Rapids!Grant funds will be used to establish the Michigan Statewide Targeted Apprenticeship Inclusion & Readiness System (MiSTAIRS) a partnership of LEO, the Michigan Works! network, Michigan Career & Technical Institute, Michigan Association of Community and Adult Education, and the Access to Apprenticeship Consortium including OE324 and other labor and contractors.MiSTAIRS will enable more than 1,640 workers to enroll in Registered Apprenticeship programs over a four-year period in sectors - including the expansion of Pre-Apprenticeship programs that help transition future apprentices into a great career in the trades!#OE324STRONG #OE324PROUD #OE324TRAINS ... Last week we hosted the 2021 Detroit Workforce of the Future cohort at the #OE324 Construction Career Center in Howell! We were joined by Gayanga Co. and Joe Tate State Representative of House District 2 as students tried their hands on cranes and an excavator! Detroit Workforce of the Future invites students from Cody, Pershing, and Osborn High Schools, as well as Randolph Career and Technical Center to take part in a 16-week Pre-Apprenticeship program that introduces them to and helps them develop skills for future success in the professional skilled trades. This means preparing them for entry into Registered Apprenticeship programs, with a curriculum focusing on hands-on learning as well as classroom guidance. The 2021 cohort consists of 16 students, grades 11 and 12, who have spent the summer learning about the different skilled trades, interacting with professional instructors, educators, and contractors, and having hands-on experiences at different job sites.
